Book Reviews

I just finished the first two books in The Dopple Ganger Chronicles 6-book series and I can see why they say G.P. Taylor is "Hotter than Potter." and "The new C.S. Lewis." His stories weave mystery and suspense with Christian themes and an over arching story that is revealed with brief hints and wonderful adventure. The quasi-graphic novels pull you into the world and provide you with snippets of images and story that makes you salivate for more. Each time you turn the page you come across something different, whether it is portions of the text enlarged and treated with different fonts, a black and white graphic spanning two pages, or a series of full page color comics of the story. The first book The First Escape introduces us to Saskia and Sadie Dopple and Erik Ganger, giving us the series title The Dopple Ganger Chronicles. While I won't give away any plot points or even story line (For those of you who want to know you can go online and find out and for those of you who do not, well I don't want to ruin anything here) I will say that the adventures in these books are exciting, daring, and could be considered frightening. Happily, I received a copy of the second book at ICRS, thanks to Tyndale Publishers, it is titled The Secret of Indigo Moon, however it will not hit book shelves until September. So that gives you exactly one month to read the first book and being a quasi-graphic novel, that won't take you very long. Either way check out his work and let me know what you think. I really enjoyed it. If you have read anything by G.P. Taylor, please comment about it and let me know what you've read and what you thought about his work at this link http://thequestfortruthbooks.blogspot.com/2009/08/dopple-ganger-chronichles.html

“The book is about twin sisters, and their mom abandoned them. Now they live in a school orphanage. Then one day, the youngest girl Saskia gets adopted and her sister Sadie comes to save her from getting KILLED! My favorite part of the book is when all these people come and try to kill Saskia. I like The First Escape because it's good and because it combines two of my favorite kinds of books: comics and chapter books! I like G.P. Taylor's writing because it draws you in and you can't get out of it! I would recommend this book to a friend because it's good and they would love it!”

“The Isambard Dunstan School for Wayward Children is an orphanage strictly for girls. It is where twins Sadie and Saskia Dopple live -- and conduct their reign of terror over staff and other students alike, until the day writer Muzz Elliott arrives and carries off Saskia.

The twins have never been separated before. Saskia is to be raised as Elliott's daughter while Sadie remains behind at Isambard Dunstan's. Then one of Sadie's tricks goes awry. She is threatened with prison, but instead escapes the school with the help of Erik Ganger, former thief and current handyman. But their escape is not easy, and Erik and Sadie are pursued every step of the way as they rush to Muzz Elliott's house to retrieve Saskia. She, meanwhile, has discovered a deadly secret that places her in even more danger than the other two.

The DoppleGanger Chronicles: The First Escape is an odd combination of novel and graphic novel that should appeal to 10- to 14-year-olds. The graphic novel sections' artwork is simple, with faded sepia tones that match the story's early 20th-century setting, while the strong graphics of the text sections of the book are surprising and visually arresting. Add to this a rousing adventure story full of action, near escapes, enemies on all sides and clever, resourceful children, and you have a winning combination.

Though the ending is a bit too neat, it is not unexpected and young readers will love it.”

What's it about? This is the first in the Dopple Ganger Chronicles which is bound to be a hit with readers all over the world. It follows the adventures of Saskia and Sadie Dopple and their friend, former thief Erik Morrissey Ganger. They all live in Isambard Dunstan's School for Wayward Children where daily activities include food fights, riots and threats of expulsion. This first book sees a wealthy lady come to the school and adopt Saskia but not her sister. Sadie and Erik immediately run away to find her whilst Saskia uncovers a plot which threatens her life. Will the threesome find each other in time? This is an amazing thriller which is half comic, half book and the illustrations and pages with just one word on add to the mystery and suspense even more. We loved it!
